Under New Jersey law, penalties for leaving the scene of an accident may be as high as $2000, 6 months in jail, and permanent loss of driving privileges in the state.
If you are driving a vehicle involved in a traffic accident that involves property damage or injury, you are required to stop, show your driver’s license and insurance information to the owners of the other vehicle(s) involved, and notify the police. If you hit a car which was unattended, you are required to notify police of the accident. If you are injured and unable to make a report at the time of the accident, you are responsible for doing so as soon as possible.
