The New Jersey Assembly is Democrat led, and so is the Governor. However NJ Governor was not able to sign the bill on Thursday due to the winter weather mix in New Jersey.
The back and forth stems from the governor and lawmakers trying to negotiate in private changes to nuances of the bill that the Governor has been analyzing since December. The governor supports the bill but does not talk much about the disagreements. He has stated that he “does not want young people and people of color tangled up in the criminal justice system. “
The first deadline was February 8, and was then moved to Thursday because of last minute changes to the legislation. Thursday’s deadline was moved to Friday because of the weather and has now been moved to Monday not just because of the weather but further talks.
The new deadline to sign is on Monday. Maybe it will come to fruition this time around.
