The J-1 nonimmigrant visa classification is for exchange visitors who come to the USA to participate in an exchange visitor program administered by the U.S. Department of State. There are different programs within the J-1 category, including trainees, college or university students, secondary school students, professors and research scholars, short-term scholars, specialists, foreign medical graduates, international and government visitors, teachers, camp counselors, au pairs, and summer work / travel students.
Because J-1 visa classification incorporates a number of different categories of visitors, the specific requirements may differ. However the requirements common to all programs are as follows:
President Trump has suspended J visas until the end of 2020.
The J-1 Visa allows those who are approved to participate in an “exchange program” to temporarily remain in the U.S. for the duration of the program. J-1 program categories range from au pair, scientist, student to physician and can also provide for summer employment. Often, but not always, the J-1 nonimmigrant is expected to return to his home country for 2 years after completion of his program, in order to utilize the experience and skills he had acquired. However, this 2-year requirement only applies to obtaining an H or L visa or permanent residence in the United States.
Sometimes, it is possible to obtain to a J waiver to eliminate this 2-year requirement.
Without the J waiver you will have to go home for 2 years to your country after residency is done to your home country
